SERIES: The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)

CLASS: Always wanted to be a Hero but turned Villain in the end
HOUSING: Solo housing prefered!

BACKGROUND: Vanya + the series

PERSONALITY:
When Reginald Hargreeves introduced the Umbrella Academy to the world, he announced that he had adopted six children with extraordinary abilities. Vanya Hargreeves is Number Seven. Raised to believe she was completely ordinary and unable to be extraordinary in any part of her life, the effects of this treatment have shaped her entire life. Her self-esteem is non-existent, she feels as if she's always an inconvenience, but still she keeps trying, hoping to once day meet impossible expectations.

Can you imagine sharing your birthday with six world-famous assholes who all know they're better than you?
Vanya cares deeply for her siblings, despite the isolation she's had from them her entire life. An outsider looking in at the team their father had created of all the children but herself, told repeatedly that she wasn't good enough to join them, she still adored her brothers and sister and supported them on a personal and superhero level, helping during their training sessions as much as she was allowed and offering encouragement in whatever way she could. But their father's isolation of Vanya led her siblings to believe that Vanya was the one isolating herself from them, keeping her family at arm's length of her own volition, when just the opposite was true. In all her life, Vanya has wanted nothing more than to be a part of the Umbrella Academy, accepted by her siblings and able to stand at their side.

I figured, why not?
When Vanya writes her memoir at age 24, it is a last-ditch effort to finally do something that will set her apart, that will finally prove she can be extraordinary too. But the popularity of her book wanes quickly and she's left with siblings who are angry at her for sharing their secrets and a father who still refuses to acknowledge that she has as much value as her siblings. This cements Vanya's ordinariness in her own mind and she begins to live her life stuck in the dredges of mediocrity, no longer beliving she's capable of anything that could possibly be conceived as greatness.

When I was a kid, I felt like I had to apologize for even breathing.
And then she met Leonard. An ordinary guy who showed extraordinary interest in her, she was wary at first, not quite believing that his interest could possibly be real — when had anyone truly cared about her? But he does, or at least he seems to, and so of course, she falls for the guy who wants to know what she has to say and wants to spend time with her. Leonard urges her to stop apologizing for her very existence and supports her quest to rise in the ranks of her orchestra, and Vanya pays no attention to her sister's warnings to be careful of the guy who seems too good to be true. It's unfortunate because Leonard preys on Vanya's broken sense of self-worth to win her devotion and manipulate her into turning against her family.

If you're raised to believe that nothing about you is special, if the benchmark is extraordinary, what do you do if you're not?
When Vanya learns that her entire life has been a life, she's devastated. Lied to by her father and the guardians who helped raise her, it turns out she is extraordinary, incredibly so, and that even her sister was made to be part of the deception by warping her memories to forget that she was ever anything but ordinary. She loses control of her newly reawakened powers when she becomes emotional, to the point of hurting her sister and brutally killing the man she'd thought she loved, and in the ensuing chaos, she goes to the one place she thinks she'll find the help she needs — home. But Luther follows their father's example and locks her away instead of trying to help her, and she watches as her siblings turn away and leave her in that silent cell.

Did you know?
With the betrayal of her family, Vanya sheds the last of her humanity, becoming swept up in the heartbreak and agonizing distress of her situation and giving in to the thrillingly destructive power at her fingertips. The academy is left a pile of rubble and she turns her focus to the only thing she has left that makes sense: her music. Performing at the concert as the first chair violinist, she is finally able to be seen by the world for the greatness within her... and of course, her family has to come and ruin it. Her brothers try to take her out and she stops them, but the series of events that follow will haunt her for the rest of her days. While she still loves her siblings, she's not sure that she can trust them, or them her after she quite literally caused the apocalypse. The guilt of her actions will weigh on her spirit and eat her up inside, though in her heart she knows it could have been avoided if only her family hadn't been quite so damaged by a father who was incapable of giving love.

POWER: Note: Vanya's powers are tied to her emotions. Her level of control over them will vary with her emotional state until she has properly trained with them.
THE SUMMONS ☂ She can summon her siblings with a symbolic phrase or action linked to each individual (used only with ooc permission). For example, to summon Five she would make a peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich and set it out for him, and to summon Allison, she would speak aloud "I heard a rumor that Allison is here." Once summoned, that sibling will appear in her location within a few seconds.

THE COLORING ☂ By physically touching something, she can drain the color from it until it is left completely white, or conversely color objects that are originally white. This effect spreads from her touch like ink spreading into water and only works on inanimate objects. The larger the object, the longer the transformation will take.

THE RESONANCE ☂ She can transform musical sounds into energy that can be directed outward from her to a distance of 20 feet. This energy can be used for such things as physical attacks, such as knocking someone down or causing explosive force in an area, or pulling others' attention to herself.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[ When the video feed begins, Vanya just stares at the screen, trying to figure out if it's working properly. She'd been shown how to do this, but she's just not quite sure... Oh well, the only way to find out is to just do the thing, right? So, straightening up, she clears her throat nervously and forces a smile. ]

Hello. My name is Vanya Hargreeves and I just got here. I'm sure you've heard that a lot recently...

[ Her voice trails off and she looks down for a moment, clearly uncertain about continuing on this course of action, but what other choice does she have? ]

I've been given a job here, like everyone else I guess, but I'd like to keep doing what I'm used to. [ What she's good at. ] I taught violin back home. If anyone's interested in private lessons, I'll teach anyone regardless of age or ability.
